Soldering irons are a great compact welding tool to have on hand in any workshop or factory, thanks to their simple use and easy portability. Soldering guns are favoured by electricians, plumbers, and many more tradespeople, and considered to be a staple power tool for good reason. Whether you’re looking to join pipework together, splice together electrical wires, or fuse other pieces of metal together, a soldering kit will get the job done securely.

Soldering irons work by generating heat from a filament to melt solder via the heated tip, which is used to join together two individual components such as wires or pieces of metal. You should choose a model that has an ergonomic handle plus a stand to protect your surfaces when you need to put the hot soldering iron down.

There are different types of soldering irons available on the market, the main ones being electric (mains or battery powered) and gas soldering irons. Gas soldering irons or battery powered models are a good choice if you’re likely to be working in an area without easy access to mains power and would benefit from using a cordless soldering gun. However, mains powered soldering irons can be easier to use due to their consistent temperature maintained by the mains power, which helps with improved accuracy and precision.

How to use a soldering iron:

Using a soldering gun is easy, thanks to their insulated handles and many come with safety stands too. You just need to be careful to avoid touching the hot element and take care for accurate precision. Simply plug an electric soldering iron into the mains, or ensure the battery pack is charged up, and use the temperature controls on the iron itself for maximum control. Once the solder is applied, do not touch it until it has fully cooled and hardened. Make sure to clean the end of your soldering iron to remove any excess solder, as this will extend the life of the tool.
