Dehumidifier FAQs

What does a dehumidifier do?

Dehumidifiers remove excess moisture from the atmosphere to reduce the overall humidity level. This moisture is stored in a tank which can be emptied periodically.

What should the humidity be in a house?

Mould only starts to set in at more than 60% humidity, so setting your dehumidifier to either 55% or 50% will be a comfortable level for a home environment. There’s no need to drop below this level, however, otherwise the air may end up feeling too dry which can cause problems of its own.

Will dehumidifiers remove my damp?

Dehumidifiers are perfect for significantly reducing the condensation you may experience on your windows and reduce the moisture in the air as a whole. Dehumidifiers can assist in removing your damp, however, if you have extreme damp issues, even the best dehumidifiers will not completely solve the problem. Whilst reducing condensation is a crucial step to removing dampness in your home, it may not solve the problem completely. If you need more advice, check out our blog on How To Get Rid Of Mould And Damp.

Where is the best place to place my dehumidifier?

Dehumidifiers are best placed in rooms where you experience the most moisture problems, such as laundry rooms, basements and often bedrooms. They should be placed in an open corner of your room to allow them to remove the moisture from the air.

How long would it take a dehumidifier to dry out my room?

Depending on the type of dehumidifier, they can often significantly remove the moisture from your room in 6-7 hours and fill up with the excess water.

When will I notice a difference with the dehumidifier?

You can often expect to notice a difference in your room within a matter of days, you may notice there is a significant reduction in the condensation building up on your windows and a reduction in your damp issues. However, the exact time taken to see a noticeable difference will be dependent on the size of the room.

Can I leave my dehumidifier on all day?

Yes, in order for a dehumidifier to make a lasting difference it’s advised to leave it on for as much of the day as possible. Many dehumidifiers feature an auto-shut off feature which will prevent the device from overflowing when it has filled with water.
