Slow Cookers FAQs

Why use a slow cooker?

Using a slow cooker has many benefits; these powerful units are built to deliver long, low-temperature cooking that will tenderise any cut of meat, lock in flavour, and fit around your schedule seamlessly. Primed for versatility and convenience, slow cookers are perfect for busy families on the go – and even use less electricity than a standard oven! With effortless one-step preparation, simply pop all your ingredients into the slow cooker and select the right setting for your recipe.
These low-maintenance units save not only on preparation time but also cut down on clean-up too, with removable, non-stick serving bowls that are often dishwasher-safe! A wide variety of meals can be cooked in a slow cooker, including one-pot meals, soups, stews, casseroles, and more – so they are a great way to ensure your family can enjoy hearty, home-cooked meals, with minimal effort and monitoring! How to use a slow cooker

Generally speaking, slow cookers simply need to be plugged in and set to the correct temperature, then toss in your ingredients and you’re good to go. But if you want to enhance your slow cooker experience further, here are a few tips to bear in mind:

  • Trim any fat from meat before cooking to avoid pools of oil, as fat won’t be able to drain away once it’s in the slow cooker.
  • Reduce the amount of liquid you use from a standard recipe, as liquid won’t be able to evaporate as the food cooks.
  • Liquid also cannot thicken in a slow cooker, so adding a bit of cornflour can help to thicken sauces up.
  • Foods to avoid cooking in a slow cooker

Whilst slow cookers can make many foods taste amazing with a soft and tender texture, there are other foods that are best to avoid slow cooking. These include dairy products (they will curdle), pasta (it’ll go soggy), and some seafood (it’ll go rubbery).

Do slow cookers use a lot of electricity?

Not only do slow cookers create magic in cooking up hearty meals, they’re also fantastic in saving electricity. Although slow cookers are working for longer periods of time compared to a traditional oven, they only use small amounts of energy. So you can cut down on electricity bills whilst having tasty convenient meals at home.
