How to Clean an Air Fryer the Right Way
January 30, 2024

Given how many have been flying off our shelves at Robert Dyas, we wouldn’t be surprised if almost every household in the UK owned an air fryer. They are energy-saving kitchen superheroes that can cook almost anything, so it’s no wonder they’re so popular. But lots of cooking means lots of cleaning to do! Burnt-on sugars and sauces can be tough to remove – and how exactly do you clean the heating element? Can you wash the parts in the dishwasher? How often should you clean it?

Let us solve all your cleaning quandaries and show you how to clean an air fryer the right way.

How Do You Clean an Air Fryer?

To clean your appliance thoroughly, wash both the removable parts and the area with the heating element, if yours is visible. We’ll take you through how to do both below.

Washing-up liquid

Bicarbonate of soda

How to Clean the Removable Parts of Your Air Fryer

1. Unplug the appliance and make sure it’s completely cool.

2. Detach any removable parts like the basket.

3. In warm water with washing-up liquid, use a sponge or cloth to clean the parts, taking care not to damage the non-stick coating by scrubbing with anything too abrasive. (Say no to scourers!)

4. For any stubborn baked-on grime, apply a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water – or white vinegar instead of water for extra cleaning power – on these areas. Let it fizz away and work its magic for half an hour and repeat as necessary. Use a small scrubbing brush for any grime spots that still refuse to budge.

5. Clean with fresh water and dry.

How to Clean the Heating Element

For air fryers with a visible heating element, follow these steps below. Every air fryer is different so make sure you check the user manual or manufacturer’s website to make sure this cleaning method is OK to use on your model.

1. Unplug the appliance and make sure it’s completely cool.

2. Detach any removable parts like the basket.

3. Turn the air fryer upside down so you can clearly see the heating element.

4. Use a sponge or cloth and hot water to clean the inside of the appliance, including the element. You can use a washing-up liquid and hot water solution but make sure it’s cleaned off thoroughly to remove any residual soap.

5. For stubborn spots of baked-on food, use a soft- to medium-bristle brush to gently remove them. Be careful not to scrub too hard or use anything too abrasive or it could damage the coating on the heating element. Use the same brush, or a flexible one with soft to medium bristles, to reach the area behind the element.

6. Turn your appliance the right way up, turn it on and leave it running for five minutes. The heat will encourage any further bits of food to fall off into the basket.

How Often Should You Clean an Air Fryer?

Give your air fryer a clean after every use to get rid of crumbs and avoid any food residues becoming baked-on. This will also make it easier to do a deep clean, which we recommend doing after every few uses, depending on what you’ve cooked. (Quickly heating up a pain au chocolat isn’t quite the same as cooking greasy, marinated chicken wings, for example!)

Can You Put an Air Fryer Basket in the Dishwasher?

Many air fryer baskets are dishwasher-safe but we recommend washing them by hand when possible as it’s much gentler and is less likely to degrade the non-stick coating. Make sure you use a sponge or soft- to medium-bristle brush to wash the basket rather than anything too abrasive like a scourer. If the grime warrants it though, go ahead and let the dishwasher do the work! Just place the basket on the top rack where the water tends not to be quite as hot.

Be sure to check the manual or the manufacturer’s website to make sure the parts of your air fryer are dishwasher-safe.
