How to Apply Sealant
April 14, 2022

Small but mighty, a simple bottle of sealant is what you need to finish off your bathroom, shower or window frames like a pro.

In fact, it’s an effective, cost-efficient solution – with no mess involved – for many different jobs around the home: mouldy joints in bathrooms, cracks in windows, and damaged and dirty joints, for example.

The humble sealant’s main purpose is to act as a barrier against moisture, sound, drafts and dust, helping to keep your home looking and running its best. It can, however, also be used to keep various items around the home stable, like bathtubs, tiles, window frames and façade elements.

To get it right, it all depends on the application. Find out how below, and read on to find out more about the different types of UniBond sealant for the main three areas: bathroom and kitchen, indoors, and outdoors.

How to Apply Sealant

Whether you’re applying sealant in your bathroom, shower or window frames, just follow these easy steps below.

If you’re applying sealant on top of existing sealant, follow all the steps. If you’re applying it fresh, ignore step 1.

  1. First of all, clean old sealant well to get rid of any grime. If there’s any mould, treat it with mould remover before you do anything else. Before applying, make sure the sealant is nice and dry with all grime and dust removed.
  2. Gently squeeze, holding the tube with the UniBond logo facing towards you.
  3. Repeat the process without squeezing for a professional finish.
  4. Remove excess sealant straight away with a damp cloth.
  5. Clean the tool with water and replace the cap.

Sealant Tips

Want a professional finish? Follow these handy tips and get your bathroom, shower and windows looking perfect.

  • To reduce the risk of air bubbles, shake the bottle downwards before every squeeze.
  • Give it a minimum of 6 hours’ drying time before you use the shower.
  • Not recommended for glazing sealants, joints with water pressure/permanent water immersion, applications in contact with foodstuffs, bituminous substrates, PE/PP/PTFE, acrylic, FRP, vinyl, mirrors, natural stone and building materials, plasticizers, or solvents.
