What Colour Should Your Sofa Be, Based on Your Personality?
Sofas may be functional, but there’s no reason they can’t be a statement piece. After all, we’ve all lusted after those gorgeous, rolled arm sofas on Instagram, with perfectly placed throws and plumped-to-perfection cushions. They may spark some inspiration and serious #housegoals, but untouched velour sofas aren’t for us all.
Regardless of how often our sofa looks Insta-worthy, the colour you opt for reveals a lot about your personality, highlighting some of your key traits, including your attitude, lifestyle, and perceptions.
And, while there’s no doubt that, thanks to Instagram, some of us get judged by the décor we choose, here at Robert Dyas, we couldn’t help but wonder if there’s any truth behind these perceptions.
In a bid to find out more, we asked our Senior Home and Furniture Buyer, Joyi Gohil, to find out what colour sofa we choose reveals about us.
Orange is the perfect colour for optimists; known to promote activity while evoking excitement and enthusiasm, orange is ever positive and bright – no matter what the tone.
Bright orange is for the more daring of you who love to act on impulse, while a more toned down, muted orange ignites retro vibes, revealing you love to feel comforted and thrive on nostalgia.
Red is for go-getters. The most intense colour in the spectrum, red is a stimulant and raises energy levels and increases heartrate, meaning it’s the ideal colour for busy rooms in the house. Definitely not the ideal tone for a snug, but the perfect sofa colour for family living rooms or those who love to entertain, red is for the risk-takers and those who never give up. A red sofa shows you’re always looking for your next move.
Bright red is bold – just like you. You know what you want, and you go for it. A berry red, on the other hand, is indicative of gradual success; you like to hone and perfect your craft before moving to the next level.
Red is the perfect seating colour for open plan entertaining spaces where you can welcome people into your home and reveal your go-getter personality as soon as they walk through the door.
Green is the ideal colour for calm, reserved homeowners. A tranquil colour that always comes back around, green relieves stress, promoting a sense of serenity and tranquility. It shows how you approach your life: one step at a time, evaluating everything you do.
Pastel green sofas show you’re more at one with nature, while dark green shades reveal you’re not afraid to push boundaries and take risks.
The ultimate colour for a bedroom seating area, as well as snugs, green’s soothing nature helps you to relax at the end of a long day.
It may be the colour of the last few years, but a grey sofa says you’re always at the heart of the latest trends, though not at the expense of your individuality. Grey, much like black, goes with pretty much everything, so you can accessorise to your heart’s content – adding your personality with cushions, throws and pictures that frame the space.
Dark grey shows you’re sophisticated, reliable and open, while lighter grey tones show you love being the host – we bet you've always got something baking in the oven.
Grey will bring an air of sophistication into any room, and adds a slick adult vibe in communal areas of the home.
A pink sofa may not be for the faint hearted, but it is for the creatives. Pink is often associated with kindness and love, showing you wear your heart on your sleeve, and would welcome anyone into your home at their time of need.
Hot pink is one of the most striking colours, and can be hard to accessorise, but you know exactly how to style it. Mauve pinks and peach-toned pink sofas on the other hand, reveal you’re chatty, friendly and quick-witted.
Pink adds fun and is the best colour for go-getters, and often makes an appearance in home office seating areas – especially if you work in the creative arena. Likewise, it’s perfect for adding a pop of colour, personality and interest to minimalist living rooms.
It may be light, bright and airy, but it’s also a timeless classic – and so are you. You don’t rely on technology to enjoy life, and often take leaps of faith in life and love. Forever organised, you love to make a statement, but don’t enjoy being the centre of attention.
A white or cream sofa says 1,000 words. A true statement in itself, it’s perfect for small and large spaces, having just as much impact as a bright sofa. They're also two of the most functional colours, allowing you to have a little fun with coloured accessories, or add a more luxe finish with monochrome styling. Whatever you decide, we do suggest a white sofa is probably best left to an adult’s only space.
Blue is soothing and unflappable by nature – just like you. Known to lower blood pressure and reduce the heartrate, blue shows you’re unfazed but a dreamer, yet you know exactly what you want.
A cool sky-blue sofa says you’re mindful, traditional, and don’t like standing out, while a deep blue colour shows organisation and traditional values.
Great for rooms where you really want to relax, blue sofas help to create a space perfect for those who love nothing more than to pamper themselves – and who can blame them?
