Christmas Lights FAQs

Let there be light! Christmas lights add another dimension to your decorations, letting the light bounce of your tinsel and sparkly baubles to give an extra shine and provide ambient light for your living space. String lights allow you to line doorways, mirrors, and bannisters with glow, and can also be used as Christmas tree lights to wrap around your evergreen. These are just their indoor uses, though, so no doubt you’ll love outdoor Christmas lights just as much. Adding a little twinkle to your driveway, these Christmas lights can be hung from gutters, window frames, and wrapped around outdoor trees or hedges to spread festive cheer.

How to plug in outdoor Christmas lights

If you don’t have a safe outdoor power outlet already installed at your home, then you might naturally miss out on the beauty of outdoor Christmas lights. Fear not though, because you can still plug in outdoor Christmas lights safely without exposing a plug or power outlet to wet weather. Our outdoor sockets and plug range offers a safe enclosure for an extension lead to sit in, so you can use an indoor extension lead and keep it completely watertight, running the cable outside and plugging in your lights that way.

How to put lights on a Christmas tree

This is a brief guide for Christmas string lights. First, carefully remove your Christmas tree lights from their packaging. Hopefully last year you put them away neat and tidy, so they’re not tangled and easy to extract! Then, turn them on either with their current batteries or by plugging them in at the wall, depending on their make and model, to check all the bulbs are working.

Start winding them round the top of the tree and make your way downwards, draping them on the tree branches. This makes sure the end with the plug or battery pack can either be plugged in easily or have the power pack tucked neatly away into the lower branches. Put your lights on first before your baubles or Christmas decorations, as it will be far easier to thread string lights through the branches with nothing in the way first.

How to hang Christmas lights outside

There are a few easy ways to do this, though you’d be forgiven for finding it a daunting task! Gutter hooks will be your best friend here. However, we’ve got a handy guide on how to hang your Christmas lights outside, and we cover all of the options like brick walls, nail-less options, and guttering.

Can I use indoor Christmas lights outside?

The short answer is no, you can’t. Indoor Christmas lights haven’t been purposefully manufactured to be weatherproof, so they won’t be resistant to wind or rain. However, some lights have been manufactured for dual purpose, so make sure you check the product specifications of your chosen lights!
