Strimmers FAQs

What is a strimmer?

A strimmer, otherwise known as a string trimmer, is a garden power tool used to help keep your garden looking neat and tidy. Most often, a strimmer is used to cut grass and weeds, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach with a lawnmower. Easy to operate, they feature long handles so you can keep control of the tool whilst at a safe distance. The casing at the base of a strimmer is thread with a wire line which rotates at a rapid speed to trim the grass, and without the need for a sharp blade. An effective and practical way of keeping on top of your garden maintenance, a strimmer will help you to achieve beautiful borders and uniformed edges.

How to use a strimmer?

Before you begin strimming, it’s important you check your area is free of any potential hazards such as cables, or loose rocks or stones which could potentially cause your line to break. Protective clothing, including safety goggles, are also recommended. Once wired correctly, and attached to a power source, your strimmer is ready to use. Keeping a firm grip of the safety handle, hover the strimmer over the area you wish to trim, before gently moving to the next spot. Be careful not to strim too close to any solid surfaces, as this may damage the spool.

How to start a petrol strimmer?

Petrol strimmers are completely cable-free, so a great choice for tackling larger areas or tougher jobs. You must ensure you are filling the strimmer with the appropriate fuel, which is often a mix of petrol and oil, and top it up to the correct level. After you have done this, a two or four stroke motor system will engage your engine and start up your tool. Always follow the instructions provided for specifics on how to start up a strimmer of this kind, including additional safety checks and start-up stages depending on the model.

How to change a strimmer wire?

Like many of your garden tools, a strimmer will need regular maintenance to keep it operating effectively. Before changing your wire, refer to the instruction manual to make sure you have the correct width and length of replacement wire. Switch off the strimmer, unplug it from any power source, and allow it to cool. Remove the spool, get rid of any remaining old wire, and locate the line starter hole. This is where you will need to insert the new wire line, before winding it around tightly, following the directional arrows provided. When there is apprx 5-6” of line remaining, slot it into the spool retainer, and place the spool back into the trimmer head. Your strimmer should now be ready to use!

Which is the best strimmer to buy?

Choosing the right tool for the job can be a difficult feat, especially when there are so many great options to pick from. If you have a larger outdoor area, it might be worth considering a cordless strimmer option so you aren’t restricted by cables. These come in the form of petrol strimmers, or rechargeable battery-operated ones. Mains powered strimmers are traditionally a reliable choice, but be careful not to strim too close to the cable to avoid any damage. Light in weight, with added safety features and ergonomic designs, our range of strimmers feature market-leading brands such as Hyundai and Draper, all designed to help you get the job done efficiently and comfortably.
