How to measure a garden

  • In order to measure a square/rectangular lawn, you will need to measure the width and the length. You should then have two numbers.
  • Next, to calculate the area of your lawn, multiply the two numbers together.
  • If you have an irregular shaped lawn, it may be difficult to know where to begin.
  • We would suggest splitting the area into smaller squares.
  • Prepare the soil first – so that you can be sure of your measurements
  • Use a long tape measure – preferably one that reaches the whole length of the site
  • Measure in metres and centimetres
  • Measure each side twice
  • Write measurements down as you take them
  • Use a calculator and always double-check your maths
  • Add a little extra to allow for wastage

Tools Required

  • Laying boards
  • Gardening gloves – thick ones
  • Sturdy boots
  • Sharp spade
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Landscaping rake
  • Knife or edge-trimmer
  • Hosepipe
  • Broom

Preparation

  • Meadowmat needs to be laid on low fertility soil

Dig deep

  • For a really strong, wildflower lawn, the turf needs to get its roots deep into the soil.
  • It needs to be able to draw water and nutrients throughout its whole life. Which hopefully will be a long time. The deeper you can cultivate the soil, the better your new lawn will be able to cope with drought, disease and heavy footfall.
  • The minimum depth of soil for wildflower turfing is 15cm

The soil

  • A wildflower lawn is only ever as good as the soil beneath it.
  • Meadowmat Wildflower Turf prefers low fertility soil
  • Dig or rotovate your own soil first, spread the low fertility soil on top of it.
  • Remove all large stones, roots and other debris.
  • If possible, leave the soil to settle for a few days – remove any weeds that appear during this time.
  • Level the soil by raking it
  • Remove any additional stones that come to the surface
  • Treading - walk slowly up and down the area, letting your heels press down on the soil. This firms the surface but without compacting it.
  • If it’s very wet you’ll just create mud, so wait for it to dry off a little first.
  • Final raking. Go over the area once more with a rake, working from different directions to create a smooth flat surface.

Planning

  • Don’t order turf until you’re ready to lay it
  • The biggest threat to turf quality is time.
  • Lay your wildflower turf on the day it arrives.
  • Prepare the ground and then order the turf
  • Only order as much as you can lay in a day
  • Don’t skimp on watering

How to lay your turf

  • Simply unroll then lay onto prepared ground,
  • Start from an outside edge – and lay the first strip widthways slightly overlapping the boundary (you can trim this back when you have finished).
  • Press carefully to make good soil contact but without squashing the turf.
  • Continue lying adjacent pieces until you have completed the first row of turf along an entire edge.
  • Start the next row.
  • If you need to stand on laid turf, use a plank to avoid denting or squashing it.
  • Stagger successive rows so that the short edges do not line up (they should look like the vertical joints in brickwork).
  • Continue like this, butting and pushing the edges for a tight join but being careful not to stretch the turf.
  • Finally, trim any untidy edges with an old wood saw or sharp serrated knife
  • Keep it watered until the roots settle

Delivery Information

You should arrange for turf to be delivered on the day you will lay it. Reducing the amount of time turf is stored significantly reduces any potential problems that may arise. Meadowmat is delivered direct to your home by a pallet courier that primarily uses 18-tonne rigid trucks that are built for reaching the majority of UK addresses. However, it is possible that your turf delivery could be made on a larger vehicle. If you think this may be an issue, or you have any delivery restrictions which could affect the delivery, please get in touch before placing your order.

Your turf will be unloaded using a manual pallet trolley which requires a flat, smooth, level surface. All deliveries are made kerbside however, we will do our best to place the turf delivery where you wish, such as on your driveway.

We aim to make your delivery between 8am and 2pm Tuesday to Friday. You will be able to select your preferred delivery date at the time of order.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Turf Available All Year Round?

Turf is available to purchase all year round. Turf can be installed at any time of the year but it is best to avoid laying turf on frozen or waterlogged ground.

  • How Often Should You Water Your New Turf?

Your new turf must be kept moist until it has fully established. If it’s not raining you will need to water it yourself. In hot, dry or windy conditions you may have to water twice or even three times a day; and water immediately at any sign of the turf drying out or shrinking.

  • When Will My Turf Arrive?

We will aim to deliver your turf on your chosen day by 2pm.

  • Do I Need To Be At Home To Accept My Delivery?

It is recommended that someone is home to accept the delivery, however, we are able to leave your delivery without a signature as long as there is somewhere safe to do so, such as a flat, smooth, level private driveway. Please note we are unable to leave your delivery kerbside without a signature.

  • What Is Kerbside Delivery?

Kerbside delivery means that items will be delivered to the nearest kerbside, as close as possible to the delivery address you provide. Our drivers will do their best to place your turf delivery where you wish, such as a driveway, but this is at their discretion after completing a risk assessment.
