Overview

This turf is grown on premium quality soils from carefully chosen grass seed species, creating a dense, dark green sward that will flatter any garden design from contemporary to a cottage-style garden. This turf is not just attractive, it's really hard-wearing too. The grass species chosen are tough enough to cope with a five-aside footie game, yet soft enough for a baby to take their first steps on.

Why Buy?

  • An instantly good looking lawn turf that simply oozes the "wow" factor.
  • Premium lawn turf has a dense, dark green sward that will flatter any garden design.
  • Attractive and hard-wearing
  • Easy going lawncare
  • Grown using no plastic netting
  • Grown on Grade 1 DEFRA classified soils
  • Available in multiple pack sizes

  • 25% Strong Creeping Red Fescue for a soft, velvety texture
  • 10% Chewings Fescue for tolerance to low mowing

How to measure a garden

In order to measure a square/rectangular lawn, you will need to measure the width and the length. You should then have two numbers. Next, in order to calculate the area of your lawn, multiply the two numbers together.

If you have an irregular shaped lawn, it may be difficult to know where to begin. We would suggest splitting the area into smaller squares.

  • Prepare the soil first – so that you can be sure of your measurements
  • Use a long tape measure – preferably one that reaches the whole length of the site
  • Measure in metres and centimetres – this reduces the maths
  • Measure each side twice
  • Write measurements down as you take them
  • Use a calculator and always double-check your maths
  • Add a little extra to allow for wastage from trimming

Tools Required

  • Laying boards
  • Gardening gloves
  • Sturdy boots
  • Sharp spade
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Garden Fork or Rotovator
  • Landscaping rake
  • Knife or old saw
  • Hosepipe & sprinkler
  • Broom

Preparation

Dig deep

  • For a really strong, sustainable lawn, the grass needs to get its roots deep into the soil.
  • It needs to be able to draw water and nutrients throughout its whole life. Which hopefully will be a long time. The deeper you can cultivate the soil, the better your new lawn will be able to cope with drought, disease and heavy footfall.
  • The minimum recommended depth of soil for turfing is 15cm.

Improve the soil

  • A lawn is only ever as good as the soil beneath it.
  • Source some really good quality topsoil and mix it with your own garden soil.
  • Dig or rotovate your own soil first, spread imported soil on top of it and then dig or rotovate again to mix the two together.
  • Dig the soil well, removing all large stones, roots and other debris.
  • If possible, leave the soil to settle for a few days – you can also remove any weeds that appear during this time.
  • Level the soil by raking it
  • Remove any additional stones that come to the surface; and if you are adding topsoil, do this after raking.
  • Treading - walk slowly up and down the area, letting your heels press down on the soil. This firms the surface but without compacting it.
  • If it’s very wet you’ll just create mud, so wait for it to dry off a little first.
  • Final raking. Go over the area once more with a rake, working from different directions to create a smooth flat surface.
  • If you’re adding a pre-turf fertiliser, do this now and then rake it gently into a depth of a few millimetres.
  • Use pre-turfing fertiliser to give your new lawn the best start.
  • Don’t order turf until you’re ready to lay it.

Planning

The biggest threat to turf quality is time. Plan to install turf immediately upon delivery.

  • Lay your turf on the day it arrives.
  • Prepare the ground and then order the turf
  • Only order as much as you can lay in a day
  • Don’t skimp on watering

How to lay your turf

  • Start from an outside edge – and lay the first strip widthways slightly overlapping the boundary (you can trim this back when you have finished).
  • Press carefully to make good soil contact but without squashing the turf.
  • Continue lying adjacent pieces until you have completed the first row of turf along an entire edge.
  • Start the next row.
  • If you need to stand on laid turf, use a plank to avoid denting or squashing it.
  • Stagger successive rows so that the short edges do not line up (they should look like the vertical joints in brickwork).
  • Continue like this, butting and pushing the edges for a tight joint but being careful not to stretch the turf.
  • Finally, trim any untidy edges with an old wood saw or sharp serrated knife
  • Newly-laid turf must be watered well enough for the water to penetrate the soil but without turning it into a mud bath.
  • Gently pull back a piece to inspect the soil. In hot weather, be sure to water as soon as you have laid your lawn.

Delivery Information

You should arrange for turf to be delivered on the day you will lay it. Reducing the amount of time turf is stored significantly reduces any potential problems that may arise. Premium Lawn turf is delivered direct to your home by a pallet courier that primarily uses 18-tonne rigid trucks that are built for reaching the majority of UK addresses. However, it is possible that your turf delivery could be made on a larger vehicle. If you think this may be an issue, or you have any delivery restrictions which could affect the delivery, please get in touch before placing your order.

Your turf will be unloaded using a manual pallet trolley which requires a flat, smooth, level surface. All deliveries are made kerbside however, we will do our best to place the turf delivery where you wish, such as on your driveway.

We aim to make your delivery between 8am and 2pm Tuesday to Friday. You will be able to select your preferred delivery date at the time of order.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Turf Available All Year Round?

Turf is available to purchase all year round. Turf can be installed at any time of the year but it is best to avoid laying turf on frozen or waterlogged ground.

  • How Often Should You Mow Your New Lawn?

In spring and summer, your new turf will be ready for its first mow in 7-10 days. Be gentle. Just level the top of the grass, so raise the cutting height and use a grass box. Then continue to cut (twice a week in spring or once a week in summer), never removing more than one-third of the current height.

  • How Often Should You Water Your New Turf?

Your new turf must be kept moist until it has fully established. If it’s not raining you will need to water it yourself. In hot, dry or windy conditions you may have to water twice or even three times a day; and water immediately at any sign of the turf drying out or shrinking.

  • When Will My Turf Arrive?

We will aim to deliver your turf on your chosen day by 2pm.

  • Do I Need To Be At Home To Accept My Delivery?

It is recommended that someone is home to accept the delivery, however, we are able to leave your delivery without a signature as long as there is somewhere safe to do so such as a flat, smooth, level private driveway. Please note we are unable to leave your delivery kerbside without a signature.

  • What Is Kerbside Delivery?

Kerbside delivery means that items will be delivered to the nearest kerbside, as close as possible to the delivery address you provide. Our drivers will do their best to place your turf delivery where you wish, such as a driveway, but this is at their discretion after completing a risk assessment.
