This cottage garden favourite has a long flowering period and has a valuable nectar source for bees and butterflies and a habitat for moth caterpillars. These large and attractive pincushions flowers are ideal for a cutting garden. Plants are mainly seen growing wild in hedgerows, grassland and on roadsides, they make an ideal addition to the flower border and wildlife areas. Sow February to April for flowers in June to September.

Sowing Guide

Sow indoors, for surest results, 1.5 cm (1/2') deep, in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame, unheated greenhouse or on a warm kitchen windowsill.

Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-35 days, but germination may be erratic.

Transplant seedlings individually as they appear to 8cm (3') posts. (Always handle by a leaf, never by the stem). Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (Avoid frosts), before planting out 20cm (8') apart.
