Camping Accessories FAQs

How to empty a camping toilet

A portable camping toilet is one of the luxury camping accessories that not everybody thinks to buy, but will surely appreciate. Emptying a camping toilet is a delicate and, usually, unwanted job, but someone’s got to do it! The first thing to keep in mind is that the contents of your camping toilet can’t simply be thrown away straight into the sewer system, down the drain, or over land. They must be emptied at designated stations that all registered campsites will have. You might see signs for the ‘Chemical Disposal Point’ or CDP. Not only does this stop unwanted and unpleasant refuse hanging around after simply being thrown into a field, but it also safely disposes of the camping toilet chemicals that can’t simply be thrown straight into the sewage.

Most portable camping toilets will come with a detachable waste container or holding tank that has its own lid or nozzle. When you go to empty your portable camping toilet, detach the top ‘seat’ part, and make sure that the holding tank is securely closed and sealed before you transport it to your campsite’s CDP. If your campsite doesn’t have a waste disposal facility, your next option is to take the container and flush it down a regular toilet, which means you may need to transport it home. This might not be wanted, but it is important that the chemicals are disposed of properly.

How do portable camping toilets work?

A portable camping toilet typically comes in two main parts: the bowl, and the waste collector. When you flush the bowl of a portable camping toilet, the waste falls into the sealed collection tank. When setting up your portable toilet you’ll need to put the correct chemical solutions in the waste tank to control any bacterial growth. These chemicals then breakdown solid waste, kill germs, and supress any natural odours. The flush system circulates water and cleaning chemicals from a holding tank to the toilet basin, so you can wash away any waste into the collection tank attached underneath.
