Overview

This exotic palm is sure to turn your garden in to a tropical paradise for years to come. Tough and architectural, these palms will make a striking addition to any garden, with their spiky foliage creating vivid, dancing shadows in the summer sun.

They have large, deeply ridged, fan-shaped leaves that will spread luxuriously out above the stout single stemmed trunk, forming an impressive canopy of bright green foliage.

Commonly called Cotton Palms because of their wisps of 'cotton' like strands that fall from each leaf, they provide a wonderful spectacle in any setting.

Growing as tall as you let them, these stunning palms are perfect as a centrepiece, or to add height to borders. They'll also look great in a large pot on your patio. Semi-hardy down to -5°C, so provide winter protection or move potted palms to shelter.

Specifications

  • Supplied as a 80-100cm tall single stemmed plant in 10L pot
  • Availabilty: May to October
  • Planting time: March to September

Top Tips

  • Water well in spring and summer - despite their tropical looks.
  • In windy spots, provide shelter, as they large leaves can be damaged in high winds

Care Information

  • Slow-growing trees, palms are easy to grow and care for. Thriving in a sheltered site in full sun, with some shade at midday, they are best grown on the patio in large pots and brought under cover in the winter.
  • When in growth, water moderately and feed with a balanced fertiliser once a month at half strength. Water sparingly in winter.
  • If the plant becomes pot-bound, pot on into a container 2.5cm (1in) larger when new growth starts in spring, using a compost with good drainage.
  • In years when repotting is not carried out, topdress by removing 5cm (2in) of old compost from the top of the pot and replace with fresh.
  • Pruning will only be needed to remove old fronds that hang below horizontal. Do not remove those growing upright, as this may slow the growth and reduce the palm's vigor.
  • Remember that these palms have spines and sharp edges; use extreme caution when handling.
  • Semi-hardy down to -5°C, so provide winter protection or move potted palms to shelter.
