How to clean garden cushions

Many garden cushions have removable cushion covers that are machine washable. Simply place them in the washing machine on a low cycle with a mild laundry detergent. Once the cycle has finished, ensure the cushion covers are completely dry before re-constructing again. The inner foam part of the cushion should not be washed to prevent the build-up of mould and mildew.

If your outdoor cushion covers are not removable, with a solution of warm soapy water and a soft brush, work the solution into the cushion to remove any surface dirt. Then, wipe away with a wet cloth and squeeze any excess water out of the cushions. Ensure the cushions are dry before using them again.

What is the best material for outdoor cushions?

The best material for garden cushions is polypropylene fabric. With its water-resistant and UV-resistant features, you’ll comfortably be able to relax in the summer sun without it overheating or soaking in the rain.

How to store garden cushions

Whilst garden cushions are water resistant, it’s important to store them away during the winter months to prevent mould and mildew build-up. For smaller gardens with limited storage space, a garden storage bench is the perfect solution, as it can provide a comfortable space to sit and create a dedicated storage space for your outdoor cushions.

Garden storage boxes are also ideal for storing outdoor cushions and can house other garden tools. As they’re available in rattan, wood, metal and plastic, you can have peace of mind knowing they’ll match your current garden design.

How to get mould off garden cushions

The sight of mould and mildew on your garden cushions can be frustrating, but it can easily be cleaned away.

In a bowl of water add ½  cup of Vanish stain remover and ½ cup of white wine vinegar and mix. With a soft brush, work the solution into the affected areas away, then remove the cushion cover wash them in a 30-degree cycle and allow them to dry. If your cushion covers, cannot be removed, rinse with cold water and leave to dry.

Can you leave garden cushions outside under a cover?

Whilst garden cushions most certainly can stay outside under a cover due to their water-resistant material, it’s not something we’d recommend over the winter months. Storing them in the garage in garden cushion storage bags, or a leakproof outdoor box.

How to dry garden cushions

With the unpredictable great British weather, your garden cushions might inevitably get wet from time to time. The best way to dry your outdoor cushions is to hang them on the washing line to dry in the sun, if possible. Alternatively, hang or place your cushions in an area where they’ll receive plenty of airflow, the airing cupboard for example.
