Curry exploded while reheating it? Got months of built-up grime to remove?

We’ve all been there. But what’s the best way to clean a microwave

Whether you’ve just had a meal splatter all over the cavity or it’s simply time you gave it a good clean, we have the answers for you. Find out how to clean a microwave oven in our quick step-by-step guide. Hint: it’s super-easy, eco-friendly and barely costs a thing!

How Do You Clean a Microwave?

Cleaning a microwave is simple: all you need is a bowl of water, some trusty white vinegar and a little bit of elbow grease for the more stubborn areas.

1. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with around 500mls of water and a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar.

2. Pop it in the microwave and turn it on full power for five minutes.

3. When it’s done, keep the door closed and leave the steam to work for around three minutes. The steam will loosen any grime and the acid in the vinegar will help to both dissolve the grease and kill bacteria.

4. Open the microwave door (be careful not to get too close as hot steam will escape), don some oven gloves and carefully remove the bowl.

5. Pop the turntable in the dishwasher or hand wash it in the sink.

6. Use a wet cleaning cloth to wipe off all the grime inside the cavity and on the door. It should all be nice and easy to remove thanks to the hot steam and vinegar working its magic. For any stubborn areas, use a little elbow grease – or some bicarb for really tough bits – and it’ll come right off.

7. Put the turntable back and give the exterior of the microwave a clean with some all-purpose cleaner if it needs it, or simply use the hot water and vinegar solution! It will work just as well.

Now your microwave will be sparkling clean and completely grime-free! All with minimal effort, minimal spending and minimal cost to the planet.
